Toros Schools has totally 4 schools
in Antalya. Two Primary Schools and 3 kindergarten and 3 High Schools.
It was founded 10 years ago. It is one the most precious schools of
Antalya.
Toros Schools have over 2000 students. One of the most important lessons
in this chain of schools is English. English Education starts from
Kindergarten. Mainly Turkish English Teachers work in schools. After
2005 foreign teachers started to work in these schools.
In each Primary and High School there are well educated and qualified
Head of English Departments as well as qualified English teachers. The
School pays a lot of attention to Teacher Education as well as they do
to their students. In recent years Toros has done many teacher training
programmes for their staff. These training programmes are held for 5 -7
days in August and goes on for 1-2 trainings during the year in various
times. Beyond the teacher training programmes School Administration
supply opportunities for their teachers to participate teacher training
programmes in England.
In primary classrooms Story Telling and TPR ( Total Physical Response )
are the main methods applied to age groups between 6 – 10. In secondary
classes Topic Based Language Learning and Communicative Language
Learning are the main methods preffered. Creativity of the students mus
be supported all the time in the classroom.
There are various hours of English for the classes depending on their
age group which are;
•Kidergarten / Ist grades 4–6 hours per week
•2nd grades 6 hours per week and
•3rd - 7th grades 8-9 hours per week.
The classes start at 08:50 and finishes at 16:20. The teachers are to
come to school 20 minutes earlier than the first lesson and can leave
the school after 17:00. There is a staff meeting every week. This
meeting is headed by Headmaster or Head of English Department. There is
half day work on Saturdays. Speaking Club activities and quiz, test
preparations are done on Saturdays.
Teacher observations and assessments are done at Toros School on various
times. The main aim of this is to plan teacher trainings for future and
to guide the teachers to overcome any teaching difficulties or prevent
miscommunication between the class and the teachers.
With the help of the observations interactivity of the head and english
teachers is aimed. All the teachers are needed to do their daily plans
and give it to their heads at the end of the day.
The native teachers basically share a class with Turkish teachers. Which
means, for example, if the class have 8 hours of English 6 hours Turkish
teacher and 2 hours native teacher. Native teachers basically focus on
putting the aimed language functions into practice in oral or written
form.
Characteristic of learners is nearly the same of the classmates where
English is learned as a Foreign Language. As the classes are not more
than 24 students, teachers are capable of managing them easily. Toros
Schools do much care about the classroom discipline and managment.
Although tolerability and flexibility are the keys of teaching young
Learners and teens this never means allowing students disturbing other
or blocking their learning process. School master and head of English
department is informed about any problems and actions are taken step by
step to it. Native teachers score the performances of the students as
well. Scoring is not only focusing English performance of student in the
classroom and also the behaviour of them.
To involve the parents to the teaching process at least 2 parents
meeting is hold during the year and parents calls are done weekly.
